Communication is a process of exchange of: Ideas Information Thoughts Feelings Process of Communication Types of Communications People communicate with each other in a number of ways depending on both the message and the context in which it's being sent. There are two types of communication channels: Verbal Communication Non-verbal Communication Communication Message is transmitted Verbally The Communication is either done by mouth to ear or by writing In formal verbal communication remember the acronym KISS : Keep It Short and Simple Verbal Verbal Communication is divided into: Oral communication Written communication Communication We use spoken words in oral communication it includes face-to-face communication, speech, phone calls, video calls, videos, radio, TV, voiceovers... Communication is influenced by tone, pitch, volume, speed, and clarity of speaking ADVANTAGES: Quick feedback Oral DISADVANTAGES: Not enough time to think and process the idea or question Communication In written communication written signs or symbols are used to communicate. In written communication messages can be transmitted via email letter report memo... Written communications are the most common form of communication used in business. ADVANTAGES: Message can be edited and revised, the type of Written communication provides a record and backup, and reading the message enables the receiver to fully understand it and send appropriate feedback. DISADVANTAGES: Written communication doesn't bring instant feedback it takes more time to compose a message as compared to word-of-mouth and there are a number of people swho do not have the ability to write. communication Nonverbal communication is the sending or receiving of wordless messages. Such as gestures, body language, posture, tone of voice, or facial expressions. Nonverbal communication is all about the body language of a speaker. Nonverbal Nonverbal communication has the following 4 elements: Appearance: the speaker's clothing, hairstyle, use of cosmetics.. Surrounding: Room size, lighting, decoration and furnishing Body language: facial expressions, gestures, and Posture. Sounds: Voice, tone, volume, speech rate.. Levels of communication Intrapersonal Communication Intrapersonal communication is communication that occurs in your own mind. It is the basis of your feelings, biases, prejudices, and beliefs. Examples are when you make any kind of decision on what to eat or wear. When you are thinking about something. What you want to do on the weekend, and when you think about another person. Intrapersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is the communication between 2 people. Examples are when you are talking to your friends, a teacher to discuss an assignment, or to the doctor to discuss a treatment, or a manager and a potential employee during an interview. Small group communication Small group communication is communication within formal or informal groups or teams. It is group interaction that results in decision-making, problem-solving, and discussion within an organization. Examples would be a group planning a surprise birthday party for someone or a team working together on a project. One to group communication One to group communication involves a speaker who seeks to inform, persuade or motivativate an audience. Examples are a teacher in a class of students, a preacher at a congregation, a speaker and an assembly of people in the auditorium. Mass Communication Mass communication is the electronic or print transmission of messages to the general public. Outlets called mass media include things like radio, television, film, and printed materials designed to reach large audiences. Examples are television commercials, a magazine article, hearing a song on the radio, books, newspapers, billboards... The key is that you are reaching a big number of people without it being face-to-face. Feedback is generally late with mass communication. Barriers of Communication 1- Physical barriers 2- Perceptual barriers 3-Emotional barriers 4-Cultural barriers 5-Language barriers 6-Gender barriers 7- Interpersonal barriers To move past the barriers you have to: Take the receiver more seriously Know your audience Make the message crystal clear Deliver the message skillfully Focus on the Receiver Use multiple channels to communicate instead of focusing on one Ensure appropriate feedback Be aware of your own state of mind/emotions/attitude How to communicate effectively Be Brief Be well mannered Use 'I' Be Positive Be a good listener Use good terminology Be clear Pronounce your words ANY QUESTIONS?
