Downward and Upward Communication
- Downward communication: from one level of a group or organization to a lower level
- Upward communication: from one level of a group or organization to a higher level
- Upward communication keeps managers aware of how employees feel about their jobs, coworkers, and organizations in general
- Downward communication is usually one way, and the problem with it is that it's usually one way
Process Models of Communication
- The process models of communication contain seven elements: sender, message, receiver, feedback, channel, context or setting, and noise or interference
Basic Model Of Communication
- Sender: the individual who reacts to situations from a unique vantage point, interpreting ideas and filtering experiences through their own perception
- Message: the idea or feeling transmitted from the sender to the receiver to achieve understanding
- Receiver: the individual who decodes or interprets the message to achieve understanding
Feedback
- Feedback is an essential part of successful interpersonal communication
- It is the receiver's response to the sender's message, telling the sender how their message is being received
- Feedback provides continuity in the communication process, indicates effective understanding or misunderstanding of the message, and stimulates further communication and discussion
Channel and Context
- Channel: the means of techniques used to signal or convey a message
- Context: the situation or setting within which communication takes place or the circumstances that surround a particular piece of communication
Information and Control Functions
- Information: Communication serves a vital information function for decision-making, design, and use of information processing activities and ways to improve the accuracy with which communication is transmitted
- Control: Organizations are attempting to control the activities of individuals through the use of formal communication channels, which is based on technological orientation and facilitates information processing activities
