Communication Context
- Physical Context: Environmental factors (time, temperature, lighting, noise, distance) influence message interpretation. A phone conversation differs from a face-to-face one due to variations in context.
- Social Context: Relationships (friends, family, colleagues, strangers) affect message decoding and meaning. Communication style varies depending on the relationship.
- Cultural Context: Shared language and technology enable communication across distances. Culture shapes language and communication styles.
Types of Communication
- Verbal Communication: Uses spoken, written, or signed words. Includes conversations, news, texts, etc. Coexists with nonverbal communication affecting perception.
- Nonverbal Communication: Body language (gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, posture), touch, and vocal cues (pitch, tone, volume). Meaning can differ from literal translation (sarcasm).
Functions of Communication
- Social Interaction: Facilitates interaction, sharing thoughts and feelings, and establishing/maintaining relationships.
- Motivation: Encourages positive actions, influences goal achievement, reinforces behaviors, and inspires.
- Regulation/Control: Controls behavior through rules, regulations, and agreements (common in formal organizations).
Competent Intercultural Communication
- Traits include flexibility, tolerance, understanding diverse perspectives, and adapting communication style to different cultures.
Speech Contexts and Styles (Joos, 1968)
- Intimate: Private conversations between close individuals, sharing personal information.
- Casual: Informal conversations among friends and acquaintances.
- Consultative: Formal but relaxed communication, like a doctor-patient interaction.
- Formal: Formal settings, like presentations or official speeches.
- Frozen: Unchanging language used in ceremonies (e.g., national anthem).
Communicative Strategies
- Nomination: Introducing a topic effectively and comprehensively.
- Topic Shifting: Moving smoothly between topics in a conversation.
- Turn-Taking: Facilitating discussion by giving everyone a fair chance to speak.
Example of Communicative Strategies in Action
- An example demonstrating nomination, topic shifting, and turn-taking in a classroom setting where students are discussing a pandemic.
