Common Bacterial Infections
-
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
- Primarily caused by Escherichia coli, a gram-negative bacillus
- Results in inflammation of the urinary tract lining
- Symptoms include frequent urination, pelvic pressure, painful urination, cloudy/foul-smelling urine, and lower back pain
-
Dysentery
- A gastrointestinal disease caused by parasites or bacteria
- Bacillary dysentery includes bacteria like Shigella, Salmonella, and Campylobacter
- Amoebic dysentery is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica
- Symptoms are diarrhea, fever, nausea/vomiting, and abdominal cramps
-
Cough and Pneumonia
- Common coughs often result from viral infections; bacterial coughs indicate a more serious condition
- Pneumonia can be caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, both gram-positive
- Symptoms of pneumonia include high fever, cough with yellow/green mucus, fatigue, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, chills, chest pain, and loss of appetite
-
Stomach Ulcer
- Erosion of the stomach or duodenum lining caused by Helicobacter pylori, a gram-negative bacterium
- Symptoms include burning sensation in the stomach, bloating, indigestion, heartburn/reflux, false hunger, and dizziness
-
Strep Throat
- Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, a gram-positive bacterium
- Symptoms include sore/scratchy throat, painful swallowing, swollen tonsils, red spots on the mouth roof, headache, fever, and possible rash
-
Botulism
- Caused by Clostridium botulinum, a gram-positive bacterium producing a potent toxin
- Can lead to symptoms like drooping eyelids, blurred/double vision, dry mouth, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing/breathing, weakness, and paralysis
- Types: Foodborne, infant (from dust or honey), and wound botulism from infected wounds
-
Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB)
- Caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a gram-positive bacterium
- Can spread to other organs and manifests as persistent cough, excessive nighttime sweating, fatigue, weight loss, chest pain, and loss of appetite
-
Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
- Result of infection by Bordetella pertussis, a gram-negative bacterium
- Early symptoms include slight fever, occasional cough, and runny nose; severe symptoms develop to violent coughing bouts and whooping sounds during inhalation
-
Cholera
- Caused by Vibrio cholerae, a gram-negative bacterium
- Symptoms include diarrhea, intense thirst, low urine output, muscle cramps, restlessness/irritability, vomiting, and weakness
-
Leptospirosis
- Caused by Leptospira, a gram-negative bacterium
- Key symptoms are high fever, red eyes, chills, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), rashes, and gastrointestinal distress
-
Meningitis
- Caused by Neisseria meningitidis, a gram-negative bacterium
- Symptoms include sensitivity to light, cold extremities, joint/muscle pain, diarrhea, dark purple/red rash, and rapid breathing
-
Tetanus
- Known as lockjaw, caused by Clostridium tetani, a gram-positive bacillus found in soil and contaminated materials
- Symptoms include fever, muscle stiffness around the jaw, muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing, and arching of the back (opisthotonos)
-
Anthrax
- Caused by Bacillus anthracis, a gram-positive bacillus frequently affecting livestock
- Symptoms consist of fever/chills, neck swelling, sore throat, diarrhea, headache, and redness in the face/eyes
-
Gonorrhea
- A sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhea, a gram-negative bacterium
- Transmission can occur from mother to baby; untreated cases may lead to severe complications including liver inflammation, heart, and brain damage
- Women may experience unusual vaginal discharge and pain during sex
