Match the following types of networks with their characteristics:

LAN = A collection of devices connected together in one physical location MAN = A network that connects computers within a metropolitan area VLAN = A logical overlay network that groups together a subset of devices WAN = A network that connects devices over a large geographic area

Match the following advantages of computer networks with their descriptions:

Ease of accessibility = Allows users to easily access shared resources Flexibility = Enables devices to be connected and disconnected as needed Convenient resource sharing = Allows multiple devices to share files and devices Reduced cost = Less expensive than maintaining separate resources

Match the following disadvantages of computer networks with their descriptions:

Lack of robustness = Vulnerability to hardware or software failure Spread of computer virus = Malware can spread quickly across the network Implementation issues = Difficulty in setting up and maintaining the network Health issues = Prolonged computer use can be harmful to health

Match the following network types with their characteristics:

LAN = Smaller than a MAN but larger than a home network MAN = Larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN VLAN = A logical overlay network that groups devices together WAN = Connects devices over a large geographic area

Match the following benefits of computer networks with their descriptions:

Convenient resource sharing = Allows multiple devices to share files and devices Reduced cost = Less expensive than maintaining separate resources Flexibility = Enables devices to be connected and disconnected as needed Great storage capacity = Allows for larger storage capacity

Study Notes

Computer Networks

  • A network is two or more computers or electronic devices connected together to share data and resources.
  • Advantages of computer networks:
    • Ease of accessibility
    • Flexibility
    • Convenient resource sharing
    • Connectivity
    • Great storage capacity
    • Reduced cost
  • Disadvantages of computer networks:
    • Lack of robustness
    • Spread of computer virus
    • Implementation issues
    • Lack of productivity
    • Health issues

Classification of Computer Networks

  • Local Area Network (LAN):
    • A collection of devices connected together in one physical location
    • Can be small or large, ranging from a home network to an enterprise network
    • Devices are in a single, limited area
  • Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN):
    • A logical overlay network that groups together a subset of devices on a physical LAN
    • Isolates traffic for each group
  • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN):
    • A computer network that connects computers within a metropolitan area
    • Larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN
  • Wide Area Network (WAN):
    • A collection of LANs or other networks that communicate with each other
    • A network of networks

Internet and Intranet

  • Internet:
    • A worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks
    • Transmits data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP)
    • A "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks
  • Intranet:
    • A private network contained within an enterprise
    • Uses Internet protocols and network connectivity to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees
    • Can be understood as "a private version of the Internet"

Extranet

  • An extranet is a private network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with external parties.

Learn about the basics of computer networks, including advantages and benefits of networking, such as ease of accessibility, flexibility, and convenient resource sharing.
