Alimentary Canal
- The alimentary canal of a cockroach is divided into three regions: the foregut, midgut, and hindgut.
- The mouth opens into a short tubular pharynx, which leads to the esophagus.
- The esophagus opens into a crop for food storage.
- The crop is followed by the gizzard (or proventriculus), which has an outer layer of thick circular muscles and a thick inner cuticle with six chitinous plates (teeth).
- The gizzard helps grind food particles.
- The entire foregut is lined with cuticle.
- A ring of 6-8 blind tubules (hepatic or gastric caeca) is present at the junction of the foregut and midgut, secreting digestive juices.
- At the junction of the midgut and hindgut there is a ring of 100-150 yellow, thin, filamentous Malpighian tubules, which remove excretory products from the haemolymph.
- The hindgut is wider than the midgut and is differentiated into the ileum, colon, and rectum; the rectum opening to the exterior via the anus.
Circulatory System
- The blood vascular system is an open type.
- Blood vessels are poorly developed and open into a space called the haemocoel.
- Visceral organs within the haemocoel are bathed in blood (haemolymph).
- The haemolymph consists of colourless plasma and haemocytes.
- The heart is an elongated muscular tube along the mid-dorsal line of the thorax and abdomen.
- The heart is differentiated into funnel-shaped chambers with ostia (openings) on either side.
- Blood from the sinuses enters the heart via the ostia, and is pumped anteriorly to the sinuses.
Respiratory System
- The respiratory system consists of a network of trachea that open through 10 pairs of spiracles on the lateral side of the body.
- Thin branching tubes (tracheal tubes subdivided into tracheoles) carry oxygen from the air to all parts of the body.
