Match the type of bleeding with its description:
Diffuse bleeding = Wound or intravenous sites, or both, and from mucous membranes Local petechiae = Small red or purple spots on the body caused by bleeding Ecchymoses = Larger areas of discoloration due to bleeding under the skin Mucous membrane bleeding = Bleeding occurring in areas like the mouth, nose, or gastrointestinal tract

Match the laboratory finding with its therapeutic response:
Decreased platelets = Transfuse 5-10 units of platelets Increased PT and PTT = Administer fresh frozen plasma Low platelets with decreased fibrinogen = Transfusion of cryoprecipitate and platelets Increased fibrinogen levels = No immediate transfusion required

Match the condition of the patient with the necessary correction:
Hypothermia = Correct before surgical interventions Thrombocytopathy = Consider administering DDAVP Coagulopathy = Immediate PT, PTT, fibrinogen, platelet count Surgical hemostasis = Rule out before further evaluations

Flashcards
Coagulopathy Workup
Coagulopathy Workup
A series of tests and assessments to identify and diagnose a bleeding disorder, focusing on the cause and severity of the coagulopathy.
Bleeding Type Assessment
Bleeding Type Assessment
Classifying the type of bleeding as diffuse (widespread), from particular sites (e.g., IV), or from mucous membranes, vs. localized petechiae or ecchymoses.
Initial Coagulation Tests
Initial Coagulation Tests
Quick tests to check blood clotting function: prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), fibrinogen levels, and platelet counts.

Study Notes
Workup and Initial Therapy for Coagulopathy
- Type of bleeding: Diffuse from wounds/IV sites, mucous membranes, or localized petechiae/ecchymoses
- Rule out: Lack of surgical hemostasis
- Correct: Hypothermia
- Initial assessment: Prothrombin time (PT), Partial thromboplastin time (PTT), fibrinogen, platelet count
- Decreased platelets/suspected thrombocytopathy: Transfuse 5-10 units of platelets, consider DDAVP
- Increased PT/PTT, normal platelet counts/increased fibrinogen: Fresh frozen plasma
- Increased PT/PTT, low platelets, decreased fibrinogen: Fibrin split products + cryoprecipitate + platelets. Workup for disseminated intravascular coagulopathy/fibrinolysis
