Sentence Classifications
- A simple sentence consists of a single independent clause.
- A compound sentence contains two independent clauses connected by a conjunction; remember FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
- A complex sentence includes at least one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
- A compound-complex sentence has two independent clauses, connected by a conjunction or semicolon, along with one or more dependent clauses.
Types of Connective Words
- Conjunctive adverbs connect ideas and provide a transition; examples include moreover, nevertheless, therefore, however, and consequently.
- Coordinating conjunctions are used to link words or groups of words; notable examples are as, but, or, nor, yet, for, and so.
Examples of Sentence Structures
- A simple sentence example: “The man standing in the doorway is my Uncle Junior.”
- Compound sentence examples:
- “I like dogs, but he likes cats.”
- “Fluffy, my Shih Tzu puppy, loves having his head scratched but hates our gardener.”
