Module 10 - Civil Aviation Requirements, Topic 10.1 - Regulatory Framework

  • ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organisation. It's a specialized agency of the United Nations.
  • ICAO sets principles and techniques for international air navigation, promoting the planning and development of international air transport for safe and orderly growth.
  • The Chicago Convention, establishing ICAO, was signed on 7 December 1944 by 52 states. Provisional ICAO existed from 6 June 1947 until 4 April 1947. ICAO became a specialized agency of the UN on 4 April 1947.
  • ICAO currently has 193 member states.

Role of ICAO

  • Encourage the development of airways, airports, and air navigation facilities for international civil aviation.
  • Meet the needs for safe, regular, efficient, and economical air transport globally.
