Study Notes

Human Person as an Embodied Spirit

  • Human existence is embodied existence
  • Many aspects of our existence as persons relate to our bodies, including: age, sex, race, and relationships

Consciousness

  • Consciousness is the state or quality of awareness
  • This awareness can be of an external object or something within oneself

Embodiment

  • Embodiment refers to the biological and physical presence of our bodies
  • Bodies are necessary for subjectivity, emotion, language, thought, and social interaction

Limitations of the Human Person as an Embodied Spirit

  • Facticity: This refers to things in our life that are already given; including our environment, language, past decisions, relationships, and even future death.
  • Spatial-Temporal Being: Our most obvious limitation is finitude (limited lifespan). As spatial beings, our bodies limit us to being in only one place at a time. Our spatial-temporal situation shapes our understanding.
  • The Body as Intermediary: A body is an intermediary between the person and the physical world. It limits experience of the world to our own. This also limits communication and expression.

Additional Notes

  • The presentation asks if a person without a body would still exist
  • Limitations can lead to possibilities.
  • Transcendence is the ability to change, and redefine oneself, using one's inherent limitations to achieve change
  • We choose how we will define our facticity; we are free to choose how we define ourselves and how we will live our lives.
  • Spatial-temporal realities limit us, but also offer opportunities
