Flashcards

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)

The number of deaths of infants (under one year) per 1000 live births in a particular region during a year.

Perinatal Mortality Rate (PMR)

The number of fetal deaths (after 28 weeks of pregnancy) plus deaths within the first week of life per 1000 live births.

Children's Health Vulnerability

Children, especially infants and preschoolers, are more likely to experience illness and death due to their vulnerability.

Preventive Child Health

The primary focus of child health interventions should be on preventing diseases through education, vaccinations, and sanitation.

Study Notes

Importance of Child Health

  • Children are the future productive group of the population, ~33-50%
  • Children are one of vulnerable groups, easily undergo physical and mental development, which can easily change to pathological ones
  • Children are more exposed to diseases related to infection and malnutrition, which may be associated with impaired health, disability or handicapping
  • Most diseases which cause morbidity and mortality in children are preventable by primary level of prevention through health education, immunization and environmental sanitation.
  • Children are dependent individuals, and need social security.

Common Health Problem

  • Children represent an important vulnerable group esp. infants (during the first years of life) and pre-school children (2-5 years).
  • They are subjected to high mortality and morbidity rates.

Mortality including: (perinatal mortality/ infant mortality/ pre-school children death)

  • 1) Perinatal Mortality Rate:

    • It is the number of fetal deaths from 28 weeks of gestation plus the number of deaths in the first week of life, per 1000 live births.
    • It is influenced by the prematurity rate, in addition to causes of still birth as intrauterine infections, obstetric complications and general diseases.
  • 2) Infant Mortality Rate:

    • It is the total number of deaths of infants (below one year) per 1000 live births in certain year and locality.
    • In Egypt, it is about 50/1000 live births.
    • This rate is taken as an index of the community development in general and of MCH services in particular.
