The Digestive Process
- Food is swallowed and passes through the esophagus into the stomach.
- In the stomach, food is mixed with strong chemicals and churned until it is soft and mostly liquid.
- The churned food is then squeezed into the small intestine.
Vomiting
- Vomiting occurs when the stomach sends an unpleasant message, "Something is very wrong down here!" and reverses the direction of the food, causing it to come out of the mouth.
- Causes of vomiting include:
- Eating spoiled food that contains bacteria.
- Having a fever caused by a virus or other germs.
- Carsickness caused by a disturbed sense of balance during car rides.
Diarrhea
- Diarrhea occurs when the bowel speeds up and squirts out watery poop instead of taking its time in the usual way.
