Study Notes
Cervical Dermatomes
- C2 and C3 dermatomes cover the back of the head and the area behind the ears.
- C4 dermatome covers the area over the clavicles.
- C5 dermatome covers the lateral part of the upper arm.
- C6 dermatome covers the thumb and index finger.
- C7 dermatome covers the middle finger.
- C8 dermatome covers the little finger and medial part of the forearm.
Thoracic Dermatomes
- T1 to T12 dermatomes cover the torso in a band-like fashion.
- T1 dermatome is at the level of the first rib.
- T12 dermatome is at the level of the hip girdle.
Lumbar Dermatomes
- L1 dermatome covers the area over the inguinal ligament.
- L2 dermatome covers the upper thigh.
- L3 dermatome covers the medial knee.
- L4 dermatome covers the medial lower leg.
- L5 dermatome covers the dorsal foot and big toe.
Sacral Dermatomes
- S1 dermatome covers the lateral heel and most of the sole.
- S2, S3, and S4 dermatomes cover the back of the thigh, the medial buttock, and the perineal region.
Coccygeal Dermatome
- The Co dermatome covers the skin over the coccyx.

Coccygeal Dermatome
- The coccygeal dermatome covers the skin over the coccyx.
Spinal Nerve C1
- Spinal nerve C1 is unique because it does not have a corresponding dermatome
- The absence of a posterior root for spinal nerve C1 in many individuals is the reason for this exception
- Spinal nerves are responsible for providing sensory innervation to the skin of the entire body
- The exception to this is the face, which is supplied by cranial nerve V (the trigeminal nerve)
