A 25-year-old woman who has been sexually active for 5 years receives a Pap test result indicating cervical cell abnormalities. Which test would be MOST appropriate as the next step in diagnosis?
- Initiate immediate chemotherapy to target the abnormal cells.
- Schedule a colposcopy and cervical biopsy for further evaluation. (correct)
- Prescribe antibiotics to treat a presumed infection causing the abnormal cells.
- Order a CT scan to determine the extent of the cellular abnormalities.
A 30-year-old woman's Pap test returns a false-negative result. What is the MOST significant implication of this result?
A 30-year-old woman's Pap test returns a false-negative result. What is the MOST significant implication of this result?
- The woman will experience immediate and severe symptoms of cervical cancer.
- The woman is guaranteed to not develop cervical cancer in the future.
- The woman's sexual partner is likely to have a sexually transmitted infection.
- The woman may have undetected cervical cell abnormalities that could progress without intervention. (correct)
A 22-year-old woman who has been sexually active for 2 years asks how often she should be screened for cervical cancer based on the ACS guidelines. What is the MOST appropriate recommendation?
A 22-year-old woman who has been sexually active for 2 years asks how often she should be screened for cervical cancer based on the ACS guidelines. What is the MOST appropriate recommendation?
- Begin cervical cancer screening immediately, as she is over the age of 21. (correct)
- Delay cervical cancer screening until she experiences symptoms such as abnormal bleeding.
- Undergo immediate and continuous screening for cervical cancer, since she is already sexually active.
- Delay cervical cancer screening for another year, as screening should begin 3 years after becoming sexually active.

Study Notes
- Cervical cancer can be diagnosed using the following tests:
- Pap test
- Physical examination
- Colposcopy and cervical biopsy
- Additional diagnostic studies (CT scan, chest radiographic evaluation, IV pyelogram, cystoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or liver function studies) determine the extent of invasion.
- The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends that cervical cancer screening should begin approximately 3 years after a woman begins vaginal intercourse, but no later than 21 years of age.
- Traditional Pap tests are less than 100% accurate in screening for cervical cell abnormalities, and false-positive and false-negative results do occur.
- Liquid-based techniques can reduce the number of inaccurate Pap tests results.
