Cellular Compartmentalization
Secretory Pathway
- A system for transporting proteins and lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus and then to the outside of the cell
- Involves the synthesis and modification of proteins and lipids in the ER, followed by their transport to the Golgi apparatus for further modification and packaging
- Proteins and lipids are then transported to the cell surface or secreted outside the cell
Lysosomal System
- A system for degrading and recycling cellular waste and foreign substances
- Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles containing digestive enzymes
- Lysosomes fuse with vesicles containing cellular waste and foreign substances, allowing for degradation and recycling of their contents
- Important for cellular maintenance and defense against pathogens
Golgi Apparatus Function
- A complex organelle involved in protein and lipid modification, sorting, and transport
- Receives proteins and lipids from the ER and modifies them through glycosylation, sulfation, and phosphorylation
- Sorts and packages proteins and lipids into vesicles for transport to the cell surface or secretion outside the cell
- Also involved in the formation of lysosomes and the modification of proteins for degradation
Vesicular Trafficking
- The movement of vesicles between cellular compartments, including the ER, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and the cell surface
- Involves the budding and fusion of vesicles to facilitate the transport of proteins, lipids, and other molecules
- Regulated by specific proteins and lipids, including Rab GTPases and SNAREs
- Important for cellular communication, metabolism, and defense
Endocytic Pathway
- A system for the uptake of external substances, including nutrients and pathogens, into the cell
- Involves the invagination of the plasma membrane to form vesicles, which then fuse with lysosomes for degradation or recycling
- Regulated by specific proteins, including clathrin and dynamin
- Important for cellular nutrition, defense against pathogens, and the regulation of cell signaling pathways
