Cells
- Cells are the basic unit of life
- All cells (plant and animal) have structures called organelles.
- Each organelle has a specific function to maintain cell life.
- Organelles are "little organs".
Organelles and their Functions
- Cell Membrane: Surrounds and protects the cell contents, looks like a thin line.
- Cell Wall: A thicker, rigid structure that provides support for plant cells, only found in plants.
- Cytoplasm: A liquid inside the cell that distributes materials to different parts.
- Nucleus: Controls cell activities, a dark, spherical structure near the center of the cell.
- Vacuoles: Membrane-bound sacs that store surplus food, wastes, and substances the cell cannot use immediately.
- Chloroplasts: Structures where photosynthesis takes place in plant cells; they are greenish.
- Mitochondria: Structures where chemical reactions convert energy into a useable form; they are small, circular with stringy bits inside.
