Flashcards

Cell Membrane

Surrounds and protects the contents of the cell.

Cell Wall

Thick and rigid structure providing support for the plant cell.

Cytoplasm

Liquid inside the cell that distributes materials.

Nucleus

Controls the cell's activities, often near the center.

Cells

  • Cells are the basic unit of life
  • All cells (plant and animal) have structures called organelles.
  • Each organelle has a specific function to maintain cell life.
  • Organelles are "little organs".

Organelles and their Functions

  • Cell Membrane: Surrounds and protects the cell contents, looks like a thin line.
  • Cell Wall: A thicker, rigid structure that provides support for plant cells, only found in plants.
  • Cytoplasm: A liquid inside the cell that distributes materials to different parts.
  • Nucleus: Controls cell activities, a dark, spherical structure near the center of the cell.
  • Vacuoles: Membrane-bound sacs that store surplus food, wastes, and substances the cell cannot use immediately.
  • Chloroplasts: Structures where photosynthesis takes place in plant cells; they are greenish.
  • Mitochondria: Structures where chemical reactions convert energy into a useable form; they are small, circular with stringy bits inside.
