Study Notes
Cell Cycle
- Cell cycle = the life cycle of a cell; from cell division until the next cell division
- Consists of 2 phases: interphase and mitotic phase
Cell Division
- Cell division = happens when an organism needs to: grow larger or replace dead or damaged cells
- Mitosis = When the (DNA) or chromosomes divide and separate into 2 identical nuclei
- 4 phases of mitosis
- Prophase = the chromatin condenses into X-shaped structures. Spindle fibers begin to be seen from the centrioles. Nucleus disappears.
- Metaphase = chromosomes align along the center of the cell.
- Anaphase = the chromosomes separate. Get pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.
- Telophase = chromosomes unite on each side of cell. 2 nuclei.
- 4 phases of mitosis
Results of Mitosis
- Result of mitosis = exact copy of the original cell (same number of chromosomes).
Cytokinesis
- Cytokinesis = after mitosis is finished, the cell physically divides into 2 cells.
