    Study Notes

    Cell Cycle

    • Cell cycle = the life cycle of a cell; from cell division until the next cell division
    • Consists of 2 phases: interphase and mitotic phase

    Cell Division

    • Cell division = happens when an organism needs to: grow larger or replace dead or damaged cells
    • Mitosis = When the (DNA) or chromosomes divide and separate into 2 identical nuclei
      • 4 phases of mitosis
        • Prophase = the chromatin condenses into X-shaped structures. Spindle fibers begin to be seen from the centrioles. Nucleus disappears.
        • Metaphase = chromosomes align along the center of the cell.
        • Anaphase = the chromosomes separate. Get pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.
        • Telophase = chromosomes unite on each side of cell. 2 nuclei.

    Results of Mitosis

    • Result of mitosis = exact copy of the original cell (same number of chromosomes).

    Cytokinesis

    • Cytokinesis = after mitosis is finished, the cell physically divides into 2 cells.
