Flashcards

Cell Cycle

The life cycle of a cell, from one division to the next, including interphase and mitotic phase.

Mitosis Phases

Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase are the four steps of nuclear division in the cell cycle.

Mitosis

Division of DNA into two identical nuclei in a cell.

Prophase

First phase of mitosis, chromosomes condense into X shapes and spindle fibres appear.

Cytokinesis

Division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells after mitosis is complete.

Study Notes

Cell Cycle

  • Cell cycle = the life cycle of a cell; from cell division until the next cell division
  • Consists of 2 phases: interphase and mitotic phase

Cell Division

  • Cell division = happens when an organism needs to: grow larger or replace dead or damaged cells
  • Mitosis = When the (DNA) or chromosomes divide and separate into 2 identical nuclei
    • 4 phases of mitosis
      • Prophase = the chromatin condenses into X-shaped structures. Spindle fibers begin to be seen from the centrioles. Nucleus disappears.
      • Metaphase = chromosomes align along the center of the cell.
      • Anaphase = the chromosomes separate. Get pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.
      • Telophase = chromosomes unite on each side of cell. 2 nuclei.

Results of Mitosis

  • Result of mitosis = exact copy of the original cell (same number of chromosomes).

Cytokinesis

  • Cytokinesis = after mitosis is finished, the cell physically divides into 2 cells.
