5 Questions
Where do microvesicles originate from?
The rER
What is the primary function of macrovesicles?
Discharging content outside the cell via exocytosis
What is the primary location of macrovesicles?
Mature surface
What is the fate of some macrovesicles?
They remain in the cell as lysosomes
What is a characteristic of microvesicles?
They contain newly formed proteins
Study Notes
Microvesicles (Transfer Vesicles)
- Small, electron-dense vesicles present at the immature surface of the Golgi apparatus
- Originate from budding of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER)
- Contain newly formed proteins
Macrovesicles (Secretory Vesicles)
- Larger in size compared to microvesicles
- Present at the mature surface of the Golgi stack
- Formed by pinching off from the mature surface of the Golgi stack
- Migrate to the cell membrane and fuse with it
- Discharge their content outside the cell through exocytosis
- Can also remain in the cell as lysosomes
This quiz covers the structure and function of the Golgi apparatus and its associated vesicles, including microvesicles and macrovesicles, in cell biology.
