A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a specialized driver's license required to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or heavier, or to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. There are three main classes of CDL licenses, each with specific requirements and permissions:

Class A

• Consists of any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
• Requires a valid driver's license from Colorado or another state, a current DOT medical card, a Social Security number, proof of lawful presence in the US, and successful completion of a commercial drive skills test.
• May include additional endorsements, such as the Hazardous Materials (HazMAT) endorsement, which allows drivers to carry hazardous materials.

Class B

• Applies to straight trucks and light combinations, and requires a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
• Also requires a valid driver's license, a current DOT medical card, a Social Security number, proof of lawful presence in the US, and successful completion of a commercial drive skills test.
• As with Class A, additional endorsements may be required depending on the specific vehicle and its cargo.

Class C

• Applies to single vehicles with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds, or to vehicles that transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
• Requires a valid driver's license, a current DOT medical card, a Social Security number, proof of lawful presence in the US, and successful completion of a commercial drive skills test.
• Does not require an additional HazMAT endorsement, as the vehicles in this class do not typically carry hazardous materials.

In addition to the basic CDL classes, there are six types of endorsements that drivers can add to their CDL license, along with the testing requirements for each one:

1. N Endorsement (Tanker truck operator)
2. H Endorsement (HAZMAT)
3. P Endorsement (Passenger)
4. H Endorsement (Hazardous Materials)
5. A Endorsement (Animal welfare)
6. T Endorsement (Temperature control)

The cost of obtaining a CDL varies depending on factors such as the state, type of CDL, and training program. On average, the total costs, including training fees, written and skills test fees, and licensing fees, can range from $1,500 to $8,000. CDL training programs, which are often the most significant expense, can vary in cost based on the length and type of program, typically between $3,000 and $7,000. Additional expenses may include medical exams, endorsements for specific vehicle types, and study materials.

To obtain a CDL, you must follow several steps:

1. Meet the basic medical requirements, which include a current DOT medical card.
2. Obtain a valid driver's license from Colorado or another state, or a commercial learner's permit (CLP).
3. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) at an approved school, if applicable.
4. Pass the written, skills, and road tests required for your specific CDL class.
5. Pay the necessary fees for your CDL application, license, and any additional endorsements.
