    Study Notes

    CCS101 Introduction to Computing

    • Course name: CCS101 Introduction to Computing
    • Institution: University of Cabuyao
    • Website: pnc.edu.ph
    • Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to
      • Describe at least five key components of a computer system
      • Differentiate types of operating systems
      • Explain Graphic User Interface (GUI)
      • Explain different types of operating systems
      • Describe at least four GUI elements

    Components of a Computer System

    • A computer system has five core components: input unit, output unit, memory unit, control unit, and arithmetic and logical unit (ALU).
    • Input Unit: A computer responds to commands given through the input unit or input devices.
    • Output Unit: Provides the computer's response to a command, referred to as output. The monitor is a common output device.
    • Memory Unit: Stores data entered by an input device, transmits it to other CPU parts, and is managed by the central processing unit (CPU).
    • Control Unit: Manages the entire computer's operation, manages incoming data for processing, and outputs results to the user.
    • Arithmetic and Logical Unit (ALU): Performs mathematical calculations, comparison of data, and decision-making within the CPU.

    Parts of the Computer

    • Processing Unit ('brain'): the CPU, processes data from the input and storage units.
    • Input Devices: keyboard, mouse, joystick, trackball, touch-sensitive monitors, voice input
    • Output Devices: monitor, printer, speakers
    • Storage Units: permanent disk storage—floppy disks, hard disks, CDs, memory cards, and memory sticks

    External and Internal Parts

    • External parts: Devices connected to the system unit (outside), e.g., mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer
    • Internal parts: Devices inside the system unit, e.g., power supply, hard drive, floppy drive, CD drive, RAM, CPU, motherboard, sound card, video card, network card

    Hardware and Software

    • Hardware: tangible computer parts
    • Software: computer instructions or data; often categorized into systems software (e.g., operating system) and applications software (e.g., word processors).

    Data

    • Data: distinct pieces of information, organized for specific uses.

    Peopleware

    • Peopleware: users, programmers, technicians, and other individuals involved in the computer system

    GUI (Graphical User Interface)

    • GUI: an operating system interface that utilizes icons, menus, and a mouse to facilitate user interaction.
    • GUI development language examples: C#, Java, HTML/JavaScript, Python, C/C++
    • GUI element examples: icon, button, menu, dialogue box, tab, toolbar, ribbon.

    GUI Operating Systems

    • Examples: Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android
    • Advantages: greater usability for users, easier to use than command-line interfaces like MS-DOS, uses more user-friendly interactions like drag and drop and simple icons
    • Disadvantages: needs more system resources (processing power and memory), can be complex for beginners
