Relative Risk Equation (RR)

RR = Events in treated group / Events in non-treated group

Median Survival Time

Time when 50% of patients remain alive

A randomized control trial is conducted to compare a new anticoagulant drug (Drug A) to one that has been the standard of care (Drug B). There are 1000 high risk patients enrolled; 500 are randomized to each treatment arm and are followed for two years to see who develops a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Over the next two years, 25 patients who received Drug A and 45 patients who received Drug B develop DVTs. What is the Relative Risk of developing a DVT if a patient is on Drug A compared to Drug B?

RR = (Events in treated group/Total in treated group) / (Events in non-treated groups/Total in non-treated group)

25/500 ÷ 45/500 = 0.05 ÷ 0.09 = 0.55
