  • London
  • Berlin
  • Madrid

Flashcards

Relative risk/Risk ratio (RR)

RR = (Risk in group that received treatment) / (Risk in group that did not receive treatment)

Relative risk reduction

1 - relative risk

Absolute risk reduction

ARR = (Risk in people without treatment) - (Risk in people with treatment) EX: Risk of those without COVID Vaccine to get COVID: 30% Risk of those with vaccine to get COVID: 10% ARR = .30 - .10 = 0.20 or 20%

Number needed to treat

The number of patients who would have to receive the treatment for 1 of them to benefit --> calculated as 100 divided by the ARR

A group of 2000 men, ages 60-65 with HTN are randomized to receive a new drug and followed for 12 months. The rate of MI for the control group was 60/1000 and for the treatment group it was 30/1000. Find the RR, RRR, ARR, and NNT

RR = TX / NON TX = (30/1000) / (60/1000) = 0.5 RRR = 1 - RR = 0.5 ARR = NON TX - TX = (60/1000) - (30/1000) = 0.06 - 0.03 = 0.03 = 3% ARR NNT = 1/ARR = 1/0.03 = 33 of people that we need to treat to prevent one MI

Attributable Risk (ATR)

Difference in risk between exposed and unexposed groups EXPOSED - UNEXPOSED EX: Risk of lung cancer in the general population (unexposed) vs smokers (exposed to risk) EX: Risk of breast cancer in the general population is 13%. The risk rises to 60% if the person has the BRCA1 gene mutation so the ATR = 60% - 13% = 47% = 0.47

RR = 1 implies

there is no difference between untreated vs treated group

RR > 1 implies that

The TREATED/EXPOSED group has a higher risk
