    The Heart

    • Located in the thorax between the lungs in the inferior mediastinum
    • The apex of the heart points towards the left hip
    • The base of the heart points towards the right shoulder

    Heart Coverings/Layers

    • Pericardium is a double-walled sac
    • Fibrous Pericardium: Loose and superficial
    • Serous Pericardium: Deep to the fibrous pericardium, composed of two layers:
      • Visceral Pericardium: Also known as the Epicardium, next to the heart
      • Parietal Pericardium: Outside layer lining the fibrous pericardium
    • Serous fluid fills the space between the layers of the pericardium
    • Heart wall has three layers:
      • Epicardium: The visceral pericardium, outer layer, composed of connective tissue
      • Myocardium: Middle layer, composed mostly of cardiac muscle
      • Endocardium: Inner layer composed of endothelium
