Cardiac Arrest Actions
- A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating and breathing becomes abnormal or stops.
- Without immediate action, the person will die.
First Steps
- Check for danger before helping.
- Shout for help: Gently shake the person.
- Check breathing: Look for chest rise and fall, signs of normal breathing.
- Call 999: Put the phone on loudspeaker and tell the operator you are with someone who is not breathing.
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator): The 999 operator will tell you where the nearest AED is. If someone is with you, ask them to get it.
CPR Procedure
- Chest Compressions: Interlock fingers, place hands in the center of the chest, push hard and release twice a second, continuously.
- Defibrillator Use: If present, turn on the defibrillator and follow the instructions.
- CPR Continuation: Continue CPR until the AED analyzes, gives a shock (if needed), a paramedic arrives, or the person shows signs of life.
