12 Questions

What are anomers?

Isomers which have a different configuration at C-1.

What is a glycosidic linkage?

The linkage between two monosaccharide units through oxygen.

Define Proteins.

Macro molecules made up of amino acids joined by amide linkage.

What are amino acids?

Compounds containing an amino (-NH2) and an acidic (-COOH) group.

What is the significance of free aldehydic group in glucose?

It is responsible for reacting with NH2OH.

Why was the close chain (cyclic) structure of glucose proposed by Haworth?

To explain reactions like 2,4-DNP test, Schiff’s Test, and formation of hydrogensulphide product with NaHSO3.

What are monosaccharides?

Monosaccharides are carbohydrates that cannot be hydrolysed into further simpler carbohydrates.

Explain oligosaccharides.

Oligosaccharides are carbohydrates that give two to ten monosaccharides on hydrolysis.

Define disaccharides.

Disaccharides are carbohydrates that produce two monosaccharides on hydrolysis.

What are polysaccharides?

Polysaccharides are carbohydrates that, on hydrolysis, give a large number of monosaccharides.

Differentiate between reducing and non-reducing sugars.

Reducing sugars have free aldehydic groups and can reduce Fehling’s or Tollen’s reagent. Non-reducing sugars do not have free aldehydic groups and do not reduce these reagents.

What is the molecular formula of glucose?

The molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6.

Test your knowledge on the classification of carbohydrates, including monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Learn about the properties and examples of each category.
