Cancer Treatments
-
Radiation Therapy uses powerful gamma rays to target tumors. Gamma rays have the most energy in the electromagnetic spectrum, but also harm healthy cells. This can lead to the destruction of healthy cells surrounding the tumor, and result in the patient becoming significantly weaker. Patients may lose hair and eyebrows during and after treatment.
-
Chemotherapy involves injecting powerful drugs into the patient's body intravenously (IV). This method delivers drugs directly into the veins of the patient's arm. Chemotherapy has many side effects, including patients becoming weaker and experiencing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is sometimes combined with radiation to treat patients. Treatment success is not guaranteed.
-
Surgery involves the surgeon physically removing the tumor. Some cancers are not surgically removable because of the patient's risk of complications in surgery (e.g., location near vital organs such as the heart or brain).
