# Cancer Treatments ## 1) Radiation Therapy * Uses very powerful gamma rays to target the tumor and kill it. * Gamma rays have the most energy in the electromagnetic spectrum. * However, this can also harm healthy cells surrounding the tumor. * Millions of red blood cells may also be destroyed, making patients weaker. * Radiation can cause patients to lose hair and eyebrows. * Most patients become very weak and fatigued during and after treatment. ## 2) Chemotherapy * Injects powerful drugs into the patient's body through intravenous (IV) methods. * Drugs are injected directly into the veins of the patient's arm. * This is the fastest way to deliver drugs into the body. * Chemotherapy has many side effects, as the medication affects healthy cells and tissues. * Patients are often significantly weaker and may experience vomiting and diarrhea. * Doctors often combine radiation and chemotherapy to treat cancer patients. * There is no guarantee that patients will recover from the disease. ## 3) Surgery * The surgeon physically removes the tumor from the patient. * Some cancers are inoperable because patients are at risk of dying during surgery. This is particularly true for cancers located close to vital organs, such as the heart or brain.
