Life of Buddha
- Buddha was born as Siddharta Gautama in Nepal.
- His father, a clan leader, wanted Buddha to become a great ruler, so he kept him in the palace grounds, surrounded by luxury and wealth.
The Four Sights
- One day, Buddha ventured out into the town and saw:
- An old man, which made him realize people age and become weak.
- A sick man, which introduced him to the concept of illness.
- A funeral procession, which taught him about death.
Leaving the Palace
- Buddha was shaken by what he saw and decided to leave the palace to find answers about life and suffering.
Path to Enlightenment
- For one year, Buddha meditated with two elderly gurus but didn't find enlightenment.
- For the next three years, he resisted temptations with other men, adopting extreme self-discipline practices.
- He eventually realized that extreme self-discipline wasn't the way to enlightenment and left.
- Buddha then meditated under a Bodhi tree, resisted temptations, and finally reached enlightenment.
The Teachings of Buddha
The Five Precepts
- Avoid harming living things.
- Take only what is offered.
- Avoid sexual activity.
- Avoid wrong speech.
- Avoid intoxicants that cloud the mind.
The Eightfold Path
- Right View: understanding the true nature of life.
- Right Intention: clear goals and a positive mindset.
- Right Speech: avoiding bad language and lying.
- Right Action: not harming others and practicing Ahimsa (non-violence).
- Right Livelihood: caring for animals and the environment.
- Right Effort: trying to leave behind negativity.
- Right Mindfulness: sitting in stillness and staying on the middle way.
- Right Concentration: calm and focused meditation.
The Three Main Truths
- Anicca: everything changes, and nothing stays the same.
- Anatta: there is no permanent self, and nobody remains the same from birth to death.
- Dukkha: suffering exists, and it is an inherent part of life.
