Buddha's Life

Early Life

• Siddhartha Gautama was born around 563 BCE in Lumbini, India, to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya.
• He was a prince and grew up in luxury, sheltered from suffering and pain.

The Four Sights

• At 29, Siddhartha encountered four sights that changed his life:
  1. An old man, revealing the existence of old age and suffering.
  2. A sick man, showing the existence of illness and suffering.
  3. A corpse, revealing death and impermanence.
  4. A wandering ascetic, seeking enlightenment and inspiring Siddhartha to follow a similar path.

Renunciation and Asceticism

• Siddhartha renounced his royal life at 29 and became an ascetic, seeking enlightenment through extreme self-mortification.
• He practiced intense meditation and asceticism for six years, but failed to attain enlightenment.

Enlightenment

• At 35, Siddhartha sat under the Bodhi Tree and vowed not to rise until he attained enlightenment.
• He was tempted by Mara, the embodiment of desire and ignorance, but resisted.
• He achieved enlightenment, realizing the Four Noble Truths and understanding the nature of suffering and the path to its cessation.

Teachings and Death

• After enlightenment, Siddhartha became known as the Buddha, or "Awakened One."
• He spent the rest of his life teaching the path to enlightenment, establishing the sangha (community of monks and nuns), and guiding his followers.
• The Buddha died at 80, circa 483 BCE, in Kushinagar, India.
