Red Light Camera/Toll Policy

  • Employees of the Broward Sheriff's Office are expected to obey all Florida laws and agency policies regarding vehicle operations.
  • Sworn Law Enforcement personnel and Fire Rescue and Emergency Services personnel are not exempt from red light camera violations, except when responding to an emergency call, in pursuit, or responding to a fire alarm.

Red Light Camera Violations

  • All BSO personnel driving a BSO-assigned vehicle, whether on or off duty, who violate red light camera traffic laws will have their case forwarded to Internal Affairs for review.
  • Employees may contest the violation with the issuing authority, and if not dismissed, will notify Internal Affairs and their command of the outcome.
  • Employees found to be in violation of Red Light Cameras laws while driving a BSO-assigned vehicle will be responsible for paying any and all required fines.
  • Internal Affairs will request that the issuing authority have the violation dismissed pursuant to an internal administrative review.

Toll-Way Procedures

  • Employees operating an agency-owned vehicle are exempt from toll payment when on official business, including commuting to and from work.
  • Official business includes approved vehicle usage outlined in the Broward Sheriff's Office Policy Manual within the employee's functions.
  • Types of SunPass/Transponder Accounts: Non-Revenue, Commercial, and Personal.
  • To be exempt from paying tolls, personnel must utilize a department-issued non-revenue SunPass decal affixed to the vehicle's windshield.
  • Non-revenue SunPass decals will be installed by Fleet Control on all marked and unmarked law enforcement and fire rescue vehicles.
  • Commercial SunPasses may be issued to employees for specialized functions, and will be funded by the respective employee's division.
