Obedience to Traffic Laws
- Provisions of this chapter apply to vehicle operation, bicycles, and pedestrians on state-maintained highways, county-maintained highways, and municipal streets and alleys.
- It is unlawful for any person to disobey or fail to perform any act required in this chapter.
- A violation of this subsection is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation.
Obedience to Police and Fire Department Officials
- It is unlawful and a misdemeanor of the second degree to fail or refuse to comply with a lawful order or direction of a law enforcement officer, traffic crash investigation officer, or fire department official at the scene of an emergency.
- Exceptions include certified emergency medical technicians or paramedics responding to emergencies and providing medical treatment.
Public Officers and Employees to Obey Chapter
- Drivers of vehicles owned or operated by the United States, the state, or any county, city, town, district, or political subdivision must obey this chapter.
- Exceptions apply to persons, teams, or motor vehicles engaged in work on the highway surface, but not when traveling to or from work.
Authorized Emergency Vehicles
- Authorized emergency vehicles may exercise certain privileges when responding to emergencies, including:
- Parking or standing anywhere.
- Proceeding past red or stop signals or stop signs.
- Exceeding maximum speed limits.
- Disregarding regulations governing direction or movement.
- However, the driver must still drive with due regard for the safety of all persons and may not recklessly endanger others.
