Training Major Field Ops
- Reports to Deputy Fire Chief; FLSA Status: Exempt
- Responsible for administering, directing, and coordinating training of all fire department personnel in all related disciplines
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Develops, maintains, and conducts continuous training programs throughout the year, including firefighting, driving apparatus, SCBA, and other fire department related training
- Schedules training with other programs and monitors training exercises at the station level
- Provides initial training and orientation, supervises probationary firefighters, and submits recommendations for employment status
- May be dispatched to large fires and other scenes to assess training needs
Testing and Evaluation
- Prepares and administers written and practical examinations to determine firefighter skills and abilities
- Designs tests to provide basis for training programs
Equipment and Procurement
- Aids in determining design and procurement of fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, and personal protective clothing
- Maintains records and inventories of department fire hose and coordinates replacement of obsolete hose and nozzles
Skills and Abilities
- Develops and teaches theoretical and practical fire service training programs
- Works independently without direct supervision and applies management principles
- Makes correct decisions under adverse conditions and follows oral and written instructions

Working Conditions
- Primarily works in an office and instructional environment, occasionally exposed to same environmental conditions as firefighters

Materials and Equipment Used
- Department vehicles, radio equipment, hose, nozzles, hand tools, and audio/visual equipment
- Computer terminal, typewriter, and other office-related equipment
Minimum Education/Experience/Training
- Current EMT certification
- Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting methods, emergency equipment, and federal, state, and local laws
- At least 3 years of experience as a Captain or equivalent training/experience
Training Programs
- Issues monthly training packages to all groups, containing training evolutions to be delivered by Company Officers
- Conducts monthly training sessions on major topics, including tactics and strategy, ladders, communications, and water and ice rescue
- Coordinates initial and follow-up training on newly purchased equipment
- Generates Standard Operating Procedures for equipment use, care, and maintenance
- Attends post-incident analysis and provides input on training and future training based on PIA findings
