Brainstorming Techniques

Brainstorming is a creative problem-solving method that involves generating a large number of ideas in a short amount of time. Here are some popular brainstorming techniques:

1. Free Writing

• Write down as many ideas as possible without stopping or worrying about grammar or spelling
• Focus on quantity over quality
• Set a timer for 10-15 minutes

2. Mind Mapping

• Start with a central idea or problem
• Create a visual diagram with branches and sub-branches
• Use keywords, colors, and symbols to stimulate creativity

3. SCAMPER

• SCAMPER is an acronym that stands for:
  • S: Substitute
  • C: Combine
  • A: Adapt
  • M: Modify
  • P: Put to Another Use
  • E: Eliminate
  • R: Rearrange
• Apply these different perspectives to an idea or problem to generate new solutions

4. Reverse Brainstorming

• Identify a problem or goal
• Think of ways to achieve the opposite of what you want to achieve
• Reverse the ideas to come up with solutions to the original problem

5. Starbursting

• Take a central idea or problem and generate as many ideas as possible around it
• Use a timer to keep the ideas flowing
• Focus on quantity over quality

6. Brainwriting

• Each participant writes down ideas on a piece of paper
• Pass the paper to the next person, who adds their ideas
• Continue until everyone has contributed to each paper

7. Round Robin Brainstorming

• Divide into small groups of 5-7 people
• Each person shares an idea, building on the previous idea
• Rotate around the circle to stimulate collaboration and idea generation
