Flashcards

Occipital Lobe Function

Processes visual information, including recognizing shapes and colors.

Parietal Lobe Function

Integrates sensory information from the skin, processes taste, and performs higher-level visual processing (like spatial navigation) and attention.

Temporal Lobe Function

Processes auditory information, language, encodes new memories (hippocampus), integrates memories and emotion (amygdala).

Frontal Lobe Function

Coordinates voluntary movement, language production, problem-solving, thinking, planning, organization, personality, and emotions.

Study Notes

Brain Basics Part 1 of 2

  • The Triangle Brain Bee was founded in 2021
  • It is a chapter of the National Brain Bee
  • The Triangle Brain Bee is led by graduate students, postdocs, and staff at the University of North Carolina (UNC)
  • Weekly lessons cover chapters from the BrainFacts Book
  • Lessons are held Tuesdays from 5-7 pm
  • The competition will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 (location/time to be determined)
  • The competition format is free-response questions, students write answers on whiteboards, and the event is timed
  • First place receives money and bragging rights

Additional Information

  • The presentation notes the expected number of students as 20-40
  • The majority of students have no prior experience with neuroscience
  • Interests in neuroscience are varied; including a desire to participate in medical practice, especially neurology, or as biological interest
  • Included in the slides are learning objectives for Chapter 1, Part 1
  • Topics include brain regions (four lobes and subcortical structures), neural networks and neural circuits, and brain waves.
  • The presentation also features detailed information about the functions of the different brain lobes (occipital, parietal, temporal, and frontal) along with defining the Limbic system, midbrain , and hindbrain
