    Study Notes

    Body Tissues

    • Tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function.
    • Four primary tissue types: epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscle.
    • Epithelial tissue (epithelium) forms boundaries, protects, secretes, absorbs, and filters.
      • Found lining body cavities, hollow organs, and as the outer layer of skin.
    • Connective tissue supports, protects, and binds other tissues together.
      • Examples include bones, tendons, and fat.
    • Nervous tissue is responsible for internal communication.
      • Found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
    • Muscle tissue contracts to cause movement.
      • Skeletal muscle: attaches to bones.
      • Cardiac muscle: found in the heart.
      • Smooth muscle: lines the walls of hollow organs.

    Epithelial Tissue Characteristics

    • Cells fit closely together and form sheets.
    • Rich in tight junctions and desmosomes, except for glandular tissue.
    • Apical surface is the free surface of the tissue.
    • Basal surface rests on a basement membrane (non-cellular layer).
    • Avascular (no blood supply).
    • Regenerate easily if well-nourished.

    Classification of Epithelia

    • Number of cell layers:
      • Simple: one layer.
      • Stratified: more than one layer.
    • Cell shape:
      • Squamous: flat and thin.
      • Cuboidal: cube-shaped.
      • Columnar: tall and column-shaped.
