Study Notes
Body Tissues
- Tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function.
- Four primary tissue types: epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscle.
- Epithelial tissue (epithelium) forms boundaries, protects, secretes, absorbs, and filters.
- Found lining body cavities, hollow organs, and as the outer layer of skin.
- Connective tissue supports, protects, and binds other tissues together.
- Examples include bones, tendons, and fat.
- Nervous tissue is responsible for internal communication.
- Found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
- Muscle tissue contracts to cause movement.
- Skeletal muscle: attaches to bones.
- Cardiac muscle: found in the heart.
- Smooth muscle: lines the walls of hollow organs.
Epithelial Tissue Characteristics
- Cells fit closely together and form sheets.
- Rich in tight junctions and desmosomes, except for glandular tissue.
- Apical surface is the free surface of the tissue.
- Basal surface rests on a basement membrane (non-cellular layer).
- Avascular (no blood supply).
- Regenerate easily if well-nourished.
Classification of Epithelia
- Number of cell layers:
- Simple: one layer.
- Stratified: more than one layer.
- Cell shape:
- Squamous: flat and thin.
- Cuboidal: cube-shaped.
- Columnar: tall and column-shaped.
