Study Notes
Epithelial Tissue
- Transitional epithelium: allows stretching and expansion, found in urinary bladder and ureters
- Columnar epithelium: absorbs and secretes substances, found in lining of digestive tract and respiratory tract
- Pseudostratified epithelium: appears layered due to varying cell heights, found in respiratory tract and Bowman's glands
Connective Tissue
- Fibroblasts: produce collagen and other fibers, involved in wound healing and tissue repair
- Adipose/fat cells: store energy in the form of fat, found in subcutaneous tissue and around organs
- Fibers: three types - collagenous, elastic, and reticular fibers
Immune System
- Plasma cells: produce antibodies, derived from B cells
- Mast cells: involved in allergic reactions and inflammation
Muscular Tissue
- Three types: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle
Nervous System
- Part of the nervous system: brain
Tissue Types
- Four basic types of tissues in the human body: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissue
Cell Types
- Macrophages: engulf and digest foreign particles and cellular debris
Cilia
- Found in respiratory tract, helping to move mucus and debris out of the lungs
Simple Epithelium
- Two types: simple squamous and simple cuboidal
Epithelial Tissue Functions
- Protects underlying tissues, absorbs and secretes substances, and detects sensory stimuli
