Body Parts and Functions
- Eyes are like cameras, capturing light and sending images to the brain. The colored part of the eye is called the iris.
- Ears help with hearing, balance, and sound reception. Tiny parts within help send sound to the brain.
- Mouth helps with eating, talking, and smiling. There are 20 baby teeth, which eventually fall out, making way for 32 adult teeth. Teeth are stronger than bone and have different types with specific jobs (incisors, canines, molars, premolars).
- Fingerprints and teeth patterns are unique to each person.
Senses
- Sight: Eyes work like cameras to capture light and send pictures to the brain. We can see colors because of light and blink to protect and moisturize. Eye color is unique as it depends on melanin amount.
- Hearing: Sound travels in waves, which ears pick up and send to the brain. Ears help with balance too. Tiny bones (hammer, anvil, stirrup) within the ear are important for hearing.
- Smell (Olfactory Sense): Humans can distinguish around 1 trillion smells. The smell and memory parts of the brain are close together, explaining why certain smells evoke memories. Smell impacts taste (e.g., stuffy nose). Noses filter air.
- Taste: Taste buds on the tongue help taste food (there are around 8,000–10,000 in the mouth). There are five basic tastes: sour, sweet, bitter, salty, umami (savory). Taste buds change as we grow up. Sense of smell impacts taste.
- Touch: Skin has sensory receptors that detect heat, cold, pressure, and pain. Fingertips and lips have more touch receptors. Pain is a warning signal. Skin can sense different textures.
Water
- Earth's surface is about 71% covered in water (mostly oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers). All living things need it to survive. Water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
- Water exists as a solid, liquid, or gas. Less than 1% of Earth's water is freshwater (accessible). Humans need about 8 glasses (2 liters) of water daily.
- Water makes up about 60% of the human body. Pure water has no smell or taste but different minerals impact taste. Drinking enough water is good for brain function, energy, and healthy skin.
- 97% of the water on Earth is saltwater. Water is key to plants, too (absorption through roots, release through leaves). Ice floats because it expands when frozen. Some animals are mostly water (jellyfish).
Other Body Parts
- The heart is a powerful muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. It beats about 100,000 times per day. The heart has four chambers (two atria and two ventricles). The heart is made of special cardiac muscle that never tires.
- Lungs help us breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. They look like spongy bags.
- Brain is the central control for all body functions (thinking, talking, feeling, moving). The brain is largely protected by the skull. It has two sides (hemispheres), each with different functions (math, logic, creativity).
- Human body has about 206 bones and 600 muscles. Babies have more bones, some fuse as they grow. Bones provide shape and protect organs. Muscles work with bones for movement.
- Stomach is where food is mixed with juices to break it down for energy.
- Kidneys clean the blood and remove extra water and waste.
