Body Habitus Overview
- Body habitus refers to classifications of body structures, including the size, shape, and position of organs.
- Four main body habitus types: hypersthenic, sthenic, hyposthenic, and asthenic.
Hypersthenic Habitus
- Represents approximately 5% of the population.
- Characterized by a massive build with a broad, thick, and short thorax.
- The ribs appear almost horizontal upon deep inspiration.
- High diaphragm leads to a longer abdominal cavity.
- Gallbladder and stomach are positioned laterally from the midline.
- The transverse axis of the stomach is longer than the longitudinal.
- Colon sits high and extends around the entire body cavity.
- Films must be turned crosswise to capture all critical anatomy.
Sthenic Habitus
- Comprises about 50% of the population.
- Organs are located in standard "textbook" positions.
- Gallbladder is positioned 2-3 inches away from the midline and 4-5 inches above the iliac crest.
Hyposthenic Habitus
- Accounts for roughly 35% of the population.
- Considered a modified asthenic type but leans toward "textbook" arrangement.
- Gallbladder typically lies 1-2 inches away from the midline and 2-3 inches above the iliac crest.
Asthenic Habitus
- Found in about 10% of individuals.
- Characterized by a narrow and shallow thorax with sharply sloped ribs.
- Apices of the lungs are broader than the bases.
- Heart appears long and narrow in this body type.
- Diaphragm is naturally low in position, and stomach appears vertical, narrow, resting low in the abdominal cavity, and looks tortuous.
- Seemingly constant peristaltic action contributes to the tortuosity of the stomach.
- Gallbladder is vertical, close to the midline, often at or above the iliac crest.
- Colon appears to fold in upon itself and occupies a median position in the abdominal cavity.
Summary of Habitus Sizes
- Body habitus ranks from largest to smallest: hypersthenic, sthenic, hyposthenic, and asthenic.
