Study Notes
Major Body Cavities
- Two major body cavities: Dorsal and Ventral.
Dorsal Cavity
- Subdivisions include Cranial Cavity and Vertebral Cavity.
- Dorsal cavity houses the brain and spinal cord.
Ventral Cavity
- Located anteriorly, it houses internal organs referred to as "guts" or viscera.
- Divided into two subdivisions: Thoracic Cavity and Abdominopelvic Cavity.
Thoracic Cavity
- Contains the pleural, mediastinum, and pericardial cavities.
- Pleural Cavities are right and left compartments that house the lungs.
- Mediastinum is the space between the pleural cavities, containing the thymus, lymph vessels, esophagus, trachea, and nerves.
- Pericardial Cavity houses the heart.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
- Encompasses both the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity.
- Abdominal Cavity contains digestive organs.
- Pelvic Cavity contains the bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum.
Visceral Organs
- All organs are lined with serous membranes except for the brain and spinal cord.
Serous Membranes and Fluid
- Serous fluid is the watery, lubricating fluid located between the parietal and visceral layers.
- Visceral pleura covers the lungs.
- Pericardium lines the pericardial cavity.
- Peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity.
Retroperitoneal Organs
- Includes the urinary and reproductive organs, located outside of the peritoneal cavity.
