Organization of the Human Body
- The human body is composed of several levels of organization:
- Chemical level: atoms, molecules
- Cellular level: cells, tissues
- Tissue level: epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
- Organ level: heart, lungs, liver
- Organ system level: circulatory, respiratory, digestive
- Organismal level: entire human body
Body Cavities
- Dorsal cavity: contains the brain and spinal cord
- Ventral cavity: contains the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
- Thoracic cavity: contains the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels
- Abdominopelvic cavity: contains the digestive organs
Body Regions
- Axial region: head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis
- Appendicular region: upper and lower limbs
Directional Terms
- Anterior (front) vs. posterior (back)
- Superior (above) vs. inferior (below)
- Medial (toward the midline) vs. lateral (away from the midline)
- Proximal (near the origin) vs. distal (far from the origin)
- Superficial (near the surface) vs. deep (far from the surface)
Body Planes
- Sagittal plane: divides the body into left and right halves
- Frontal plane: divides the body into anterior and posterior halves
- Transverse plane: divides the body into superior and inferior halves
Organization of the Human Body
- The human body is composed of six levels of organization: chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, and organismal.
Body Cavities
- The dorsal cavity contains the brain and spinal cord.
- The ventral cavity is divided into the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
- The thoracic cavity contains the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels.
- The abdominopelvic cavity contains the digestive organs.
Body Regions
- The axial region includes the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.
- The appendicular region includes the upper and lower limbs.
Directional Terms
- Anterior refers to the front of the body, while posterior refers to the back.
- Superior refers to a location above, while inferior refers to a location below.
- Medial refers to a location toward the midline, while lateral refers to a location away from the midline.
- Proximal refers to a location near the origin, while distal refers to a location far from the origin.
- Superficial refers to a location near the surface, while deep refers to a location far from the surface.
Body Planes
- The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right halves.
- The frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior halves.
- The transverse plane divides the body into superior and inferior halves.
