Study Notes
Chest Compression Fraction (CCF)
- High Chest Compression Fraction (CCF) indicates the percentage of time spent on effective chest compressions during cardiac arrest resuscitation.
- Achieving a high CCF is critical for improving patient survival rates.
Reducing Pauses in CPR
- High CCF is attained by minimizing interruptions during quality CPR.
- Common interruptions include:
- Intubation
- Rhythm analysis
- Pulse checks
- Changing compressor roles
- Defibrillation
Strategies to Maintain High CCF
- Compressors should anticipate the need to resume compressions by hovering their hands over the chest.
- Advanced providers should prepare for pulse checks and defibrillation in advance, ensuring a minimal pause at the end of each two-minute cycle.
- Rotate compressors every two minutes or sooner if fatigue occurs, with the new compressor approaching from behind.
- Utilize a metronome for timing compressions, which could be aided by an AED, defibrillator, or mobile app.
AED Pad Placement
- For adults and children aged 8 years or older, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) pads should be positioned on the left side of the chest below the nipple line and on the lower left side of the back.
Airway Management
- When only one rescuer is present, open the airway using the head tilt-chin lift technique to ensure unobstructed airflow.
Bag-Mask Ventilation Steps
- Position the bag on the victim's face, aligning it with the bridge of their nose for optimal fit.
- Employ the e-c clamp technique to secure the mask while maintaining an open airway.
- Administer breaths by squeezing the bag, ensuring each breath lasts about one second and observing for visible chest rise.
