Study Notes
Basic Life Support (BLS) - CPR Station
- Student Learning Outcome: Provide safe, patient-centered, evidence-based nursing care to adults at a basic level following the Caritas philosophy.
- Competency: Use the nursing process at a basic level to provide patient-centered care to diverse patient populations with common health alterations.
- Concepts: Assessment, Oxygenation, Perfusion.
Unit Outcomes
- Outcome 1: Understand the importance of performing BLS efficiently, effectively, and safely.
- Outcome 2: Review and describe the Adult BLS steps for Healthcare Providers.
- Outcome 3: Demonstrate the use of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
- Outcome 4: Demonstrate the use of a bag-valve-mask.
- Outcome 5: Become familiar with an emergency cart.
- Outcome 6: Participate in an adult code, showing BLS principles for Healthcare Providers.
Basic Life Support Review and Practice
- American Heart Association (AHA) Updates: BLS/CPR guidelines were updated in 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2020, with minor adjustments to adult compression rates and depths.
- Card Renewal: BLS healthcare provider cards are valid for two years. It's the student's responsibility to track when renewal is needed.
Effective CPR
- Compressions: Adequate compressions increase blood flow to the coronary arteries and brain; the rate should be 100-120 compressions per minute, and compressions should be firm to a depth of at least 2 inches.
- Recoil: Allow the chest to completely recoil after each compression to allow blood to refill the heart.
- Interruptions: Minimize interruptions in compressions, as each interruption stops blood flow.
CPR Procedures (Adult)
- Scene Safety: Ensure the area is safe before starting; if not proceed to the next step..
- Unresponsiveness: Establish unresponsiveness and call for help (e.g., 911, Code Blue).
- Pulse Check: Check for carotid pulse (no more than 10 seconds).
- CPR Steps (Compressions-Airway-Breathing): 30 compressions, open airway, 2 breaths. Repeat this cycle until help arrives or the individual shows signs of life or an AED is accessible..
- AED Use: Apply the AED pads correctly and follow prompt instructions during application of the pads.
- Post-Shock CPR: Immediately resume chest compressions after an AED shock, following prompt instructions.
- Rescue Breathing: Perform rescue breathing (1 breath every 6 seconds) if a pulse is present.
