Study Notes

Pulse Checks in Infants and Children

  • For infants, check the pulse by placing 2 or 3 fingers on the inside of the upper arm, midway between the elbow and shoulder.
  • For children, feel for a pulse at the femoral artery by placing 2 or 3 fingers in the inner thigh, midway between the hip bone and pubic bone.

AED Pad Placement

  • Anteroposterior placement for adults and children 8 years or older involves placing one pad on the left side of the chest and the other on the left side of the back.
  • Anterolateral placement requires one pad directly below the right collarbone and the other to the side of the left nipple.

Chest Compressions for Different Age Groups

  • For children, compressions should have a rate of 100 to 120 per minute, a depth of approximately 2 inches (5 cm), and can be performed with 1 or 2 hands on the lower half of the breastbone.
  • For adults, the same rate of 100 to 120/min and depth of 2 inches (5 cm) applies, emphasizing complete chest recoil and limiting interruptions to less than 10 seconds.

Compression Guidelines for Infants

  • Recommended depth for infant compressions is approximately 1.5 inches (4 cm).
  • In a 2-rescuer scenario for infants, use the 2 thumbs technique at the center of the chest, just below the nipple line.

Compression-to-Ventilation Ratios

  • For infants and children, the ratio is 30:2 for 1 rescuer and 15:2 for 2 or more rescuers.

Approaches During Cardiac Events

  • In witnessed collapse scenarios, if alone, leave the victim to activate emergency response and fetch the AED. If not alone, send someone to get the AED while starting CPR immediately.
  • In unwitnessed collapse, if alone, start CPR but send someone for the AED if not already done, and activate emergency response after 2 minutes if still alone.

AED Use

  • AED pads placement for infants and children less than 8 should be as indicated on the pad packages.
  • Always use the AED as soon as it is available after encountering an unresponsive child.
