Blood Types
- Type AB has both A and B antigens, can receive blood from A, B, AB, and O blood types.
- Type A has A antigens, can receive blood from A and O blood types.
- Type B has B antigens, can receive blood from B and O blood types.
- Type O is the "universal donor" as it lacks both A and B antigens, meaning it can be given to any blood type. Type O can only receive blood from type O.
Rh Blood Group
- Rh stands for Rhesus factor.
- Most people are Rh+ (Rh-positive), meaning they carry the Rh antigen.
- Individuals who are Rh- (Rh-negative) do not have the Rh antigen.
- If an Rh- person receives Rh+ blood for the first time, their immune system becomes sensitized and starts producing antibodies against the Rh antigen. This does not immediately cause hemolysis (rupture of red blood cells) because it takes time to produce enough antibodies.
- If an Rh- person receives Rh+ blood again, the antibodies will attack the donor's Rh+ red blood cells, causing hemolysis.
Rh-Related Problem During Pregnancy
- A mismatch occurs when an Rh- mother carries an Rh+ baby. This can cause problems for the unborn child.
- The first pregnancy usually proceeds without problems because the mother's immune system has not yet been sensitized to the Rh antigen.
- Subsequent pregnancies with Rh+ babies can lead to the development of antibodies in the mother's blood, which can cross the placenta and attack the baby's red blood cells.
- A RhoGAM shot can prevent the buildup of anti-Rh+ antibodies in the mother's blood, protecting the baby.
