    Study Notes

Blood Supply to the Head and Neck - Arterial Supply

    • The arterial supply to the head and neck is complex.
    • Clinicians need to know the blood supply to avoid important vessels.
    • Knowledge of the blood supply is vital to understand normal variations.
    • The major arteries originate from the arch of the aorta.
    • The brachiocephalic artery, left common carotid, and right subclavian arteries arise from the arch of the aorta.
    • The left common carotid artery arises directly from the arch of the aorta.
    • The right common carotid artery arises from the brachiocephalic artery.
    • The right subclavian artery also arises from the brachiocephalic artery.
    • The right and left vertebral arteries supply the spinal cord and vertebral muscles.
    • The common carotid arteries split into the internal and external carotid arteries.
    • The internal carotid artery supplies the brain, eyes, forehead and part of the nose.
    • The external carotid artery supplies the superficial structures of the head and neck.
    • The external carotid artery branches into 8 main branches.
    • These branches are: superior thyroid, ascending pharyngeal, lingual, facial, occipital, posterior auricular, superficial temporal, and maxillary.
    • Each branch has a specific supply area.
    • For example, the superior thyroid branch supplies the thyroid gland, muscles in the neck, and larynx.
    • The lingual artery has three branches: dorsal lingual, sublingual, and deep lingual.
    • The lingual artery supplies the base of the tongue, palatoglossal arch, tonsils, soft palate, and epiglottis.
    • The sublingual artery supplies the sublingual gland, muscles in the floor of the mouth, and buccal/gingival mucous membranes.
    • The deep lingual artery supplies the body of the tongue.
    • The facial artery supplies the muscles and skin of the face and submandibular gland.
    • The occipital artery supplies muscles in the posterior neck, skin of the neck and ear, and scalp in the occipital region.
    • The posterior auricular artery supplies muscles in the posterior neck, skin over and around the ear, and ear structures.
    • The superficial temporal artery supplies skin and muscles of the scalp, parotid gland, and temporomandibular joint.
    • The maxillary artery supplies important structures of the maxillofacial region, including the maxilla, mandible, nasal cavity, and deep facial areas.
    • The maxillary artery also supplies all the teeth through several branches.
    • The internal and external carotid arteries are bilateral, supplying both sides of the head and neck.
    • Students need to learn the mnemonics for the 8 branches of the external carotid artery.

    GDC Learning Outcomes

    • Dental and oral anatomy is important for patient management.
    • Students need to describe relevant anatomy, including craniofacial and general anatomy, along with its application in patient management.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

    • Students will be able to identify the main arteries in the head and neck.
    • Students will be able to explain the distribution areas of those main arteries.
    • Students will be able to describe the connections and branches of the common carotid artery.
    • Students will be able to describe the connections and branches of the external carotid artery.

    How to Learn

    • Memorize the structure through visual aids and diagrams
    • Create mnemonics and flashcards for easy memorization.
    • Use resources like diagrams, books, websites, and videos.

    Where to Start

    • Begin with the basic anatomy of the arch of the aorta to understand the vessels of origin.
