Study Notes
Blood Collection Equipment and Supplies
- A dedicated area of a clinical laboratory equipped for performing phlebotomy procedures on patients is called a drawing station.
- A drawing station has a separate room or cubicle for blood collection.
- Outpatients are ambulatory and go to the laboratory for blood collection, while inpatients have their blood drawn at their bedside.
Phlebotomy Chair
- Patients must be seated during phlebotomy procedures, but exceptions can be made for patients who are unable to sit down due to restrained hips or other mobility issues.
Equipment Carriers
- There are two types of equipment carriers: handheld carriers and phlebotomy carts.
- A separate container for infectious waste must be carried with the equipment carrier.
Gloves
- The CDC/HICPAC standard precautions and OSHA require the wearing of gloves when performing phlebotomy.
- Gloves must be worn because all patients are considered to be possible carriers of blood-borne pathogens.
- A new pair of gloves must be used for each patient and removed when the procedure is completed.
- After completing the procedure, handwashing is required.
- Nonsterile, disposable latex, nitrile, neoprene, polyethylene, and vinyl examination gloves are used.
- Vinyl examination gloves are used in laboratories because they are transparent and do not expand, making them suitable for patients with latex allergies.
Antiseptics
- Antiseptics are substances used to prevent or inhibit the growth and development of microorganisms on human skin.
- The most commonly used antiseptics are 70% isopropyl alcohol, benzalkonium chloride, and chlorhexidine gluconate.
- Antiseptics are used to clean the venipuncture site before drawing blood.
Disinfectants
- Disinfectants are chemical substances regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Disinfectants are used to remove or kill microorganisms on surfaces and instruments.
- Disinfectants are CORROSIVE and NOT SAFE to use on human skin.
- EPA-registered sodium hypochlorite products are preferred for disinfecting.
