Blood Characteristics
- Blood is connective tissue with a liquid matrix called plasma
- Blood transports essential substances and regulates homeostasis
- Blood maintains interstitial fluid stability, distributes heat, and varies in volume based on body size, fluid concentration, electrolyte concentration, and adipose tissue
- Approximately 8% of body weight is blood; adults have about 4 to 5 liters of blood (female) and 5 to 6 liters (male)
- Blood Cells are called “formed elements” and are generated in red bone marrow:
- Red blood cells (RBCs)
- White blood cells (WBCs)
- Platelets (cell fragments)
Centrifuged Blood Samples
- Centrifuged blood samples are used to detect blood abnormalities
- Plasma is the clear, straw-colored liquid matrix of blood, comprising about 55% of the blood volume and found at the top of a centrifuge tube
- Red blood cells (RBCs) represent 35 to 46% in females and 40 to 54% in males, located at the bottom of the centrifuge tube
- Hematocrit (HCT) is the percentage of red blood cells
- White blood cells (WBCs) and platelets generally equal about 10,500
- High WBC counts indicate acute infections, strenuous exercise, and significant fluid loss
- Leukopenia is a low WBC count.
