Study Notes
Nervous Tissue
- Nervous tissue is composed of neurons and neuroglia.
- Neuroglia are more abundant than neurons, approximately ten times more.
- Neuroglia are divided into two categories: neuroglia of the central nervous system and neuroglia of the peripheral nervous system.
- Neuroglia play a vital role in supporting and maintaining neurons.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to classify neuroglia.
- Students will be able to list neuroglial cells based on location.
- Students will be able to describe the structures of neuroglia.
- Students will be able to understand the function of each neuroglia in relation to structure.
Neuroglia Classification
-
Central Nervous System (CNS):
- Astrocytes (protoplasmic and fibrous).
- Oligodendrocytes.
- Microglia.
- Ependymal cells.
-
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):
- Schwann cells.
- Satellite Cells.
Astrocytes
- Star-shaped glial cells with radiating processes.
- Two types: fibrous and protoplasmic.
- Function:
- Participate in the formation of the blood-brain barrier.
- Provide structural support to the nervous system.
- Perivascular feet help to form the blood brain barrier.
Oligodendrocytes
- Glial cells responsible for myelination in the CNS.
- Can myelinate multiple nerve fibers simultaneously.
Microglia
- Primarily phagocytic.
- Migrate throughout the nervous tissue to remove cellular debris, pathogens, and waste products.
Ependymal Cells
- Line the central canal of the spinal cord and brain ventricles.
- Secrete cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Schwann Cells
- Responsible for myelination of nerve fibers in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
- Unlike oligodendrocytes, each Schwann cell myelinates only one axon segment.
Satellite Cells
- Surround neuronal cell bodies in the ganglia.
- Provide support, nourishment, insulation, and regulation of the microenvironment for these neurons.
