Flashcards

Diffusion

Movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This can happen in both liquids and gases.

Osmosis

Movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration.

Mitosis

The process of cell division in which a single cell divides to produce two identical daughter cells.

Meiosis

A type of cell division that results in four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

Study Notes

Diffusion & Osmosis

  • Diffusion and osmosis are similar in that both involve transport of substances.
  • Both are based on the principle of substances moving from an area of high to low concentration.
  •  Diffusion moves substances from high to low concentration throughout the cell, while osmosis is the movement of water across a membrane from high to low concentration.
  • Diffusion does not require energy but osmosis requires energy.

Cell Cycle

  • Mitosis:
    • Prophase: Cell prepares for division
    • Metaphase: Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
    • Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate
    • Telophase: Cell finishes dividing
  • Cytokinesis: Cell splits
  • Interphase: Cell grows, copies DNA

Tumors

  • Benign tumors are non-cancerous and do not spread.
  • Malignant tumors are cancerous and spread rapidly.

Mitochondria

  • The mitochondria is involved in cellular respiration.
  • They are the powerhouse of the cell

Tissues

  • Epithelial Tissue: Covers body surfaces, lines organs, and forms glands.
  • Connective Tissue: Supports, connects, and insulates.
  • Muscle Tissue: Enables movement.
  • Nervous Tissue: Enables communication and sensation through electrical signals.

Plant Tissue

  • Dermal tissue: covers the outside of the plant
  • Vascular tissue: transports water and nutrients
  • Ground tissue: makes up all plant tissues aside from vascular and dermal

Plant Systems

  • Function of a plant root: absorption of water and minerals and food storage.
