    Study Notes

    Divisions of the Respiratory System

    • The respiratory system is divided into two main parts: Upper Respiratory Tract (URT) and Lower Respiratory Tract (LRT).

    Upper Respiratory Tract (URT)

    • Located outside the thoracic cavity (chest).
    • Comprises: nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, and upper part of the trachea.
    • Lined with ciliated epithelium, which helps with evaporation to moisten and protect the body.

    Lower Respiratory Tract (LRT)

    • Located inside the thoracic cavity.
    • Comprises: lower part of the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar sacs (alveoli and alveolar ducts).

    Functions of the Respiratory Tract

    • Divided into two main functions: conducting portion and respiratory portion.
    • Conducting portion: conducts air and includes pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles.
    • Respiratory portion: responsible for gas exchange and includes alveolar sacs (alveoli) and alveolar ducts of the lungs.

    Components of the Respiratory System

    • Nose: part of the upper respiratory tract.
    • Mouth: part of the upper respiratory tract.
    • Trachea: tube that connects the throat to the lungs.
    • Lungs: organs responsible for gas exchange.
    • Diaphragm: muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity.
    • Pharynx: throat.
    • Larynx: voice box.
    • Bronchus: airway that connects the trachea to the lungs.
    • Bronchioles: smaller airways that branch off from the bronchus.
