Divisions of the Respiratory System
- The respiratory system is divided into two main parts: Upper Respiratory Tract (URT) and Lower Respiratory Tract (LRT).
Upper Respiratory Tract (URT)
- Located outside the thoracic cavity (chest).
- Comprises: nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, and upper part of the trachea.
- Lined with ciliated epithelium, which helps with evaporation to moisten and protect the body.
Lower Respiratory Tract (LRT)
- Located inside the thoracic cavity.
- Comprises: lower part of the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar sacs (alveoli and alveolar ducts).
Functions of the Respiratory Tract
- Divided into two main functions: conducting portion and respiratory portion.
- Conducting portion: conducts air and includes pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles.
- Respiratory portion: responsible for gas exchange and includes alveolar sacs (alveoli) and alveolar ducts of the lungs.
Components of the Respiratory System
- Nose: part of the upper respiratory tract.
- Mouth: part of the upper respiratory tract.
- Trachea: tube that connects the throat to the lungs.
- Lungs: organs responsible for gas exchange.
- Diaphragm: muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity.
- Pharynx: throat.
- Larynx: voice box.
- Bronchus: airway that connects the trachea to the lungs.
- Bronchioles: smaller airways that branch off from the bronchus.
